Members of Glastry College Student Council recently participated in a survey on their work for a study being undertaken by the Northern Ireland Youth Forum and Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People. Members of the council recently attended a ‘Have Your Say’ event at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast, to discuss their work with other students and adult professionals. On the 29th May 2015, Glastry College were delighted to receive a very generous donation of a defibrillator from The Danny Mills Heart Foundation. The Foundation was set up in memory of Danny Mills who sadly passed away from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). The family have set up the foundation to donate defibrillators to local clubs and schools to help save lives. Glastry College are very grateful for their generosity and will add the Foundation to the list of charities we already donate to.

On 2nd June 2015 some girls from our school went to Ballykillaire in Bangor for the North Down Girls Athletics competition.
We were up against a lot of schools but some of our best results were:
Kailey Curragh - 5th in the shot putt.
Bryony Moore - 2nd in the shot putt.
Melissa Lyttle - 4th in the javelin
- joint 2nd in the shot.
Casey McCann - 6th in the cricket ball throw
- 3rd in the 100m sprint.
Aimee McVea - 5th in the 100m sprint
- 5th in the 200m sprint.
Chloe McAvera - 4th in the 200m sprint.
Minor team (Year 8) - 4th in the 4 x 100 relay.
Big congratulations to Kailey Curragh who came 1st in the cricket ball throw!!! She was our only 1st!
We were sorry the Year 10 girls could not compete due to their exams commitments this week. A big well done to everyone who participated! It was a great day out.

May Bank Holiday Monday dawned and 15 brave, nervous and possibly mad members of Glastry staff made their way to Belfast to participate in the annual Belfast City Marathon Relay race. Glastry entered 3 teams of 5 runners and each team ran 26 miles between them with distances varying from 3 to 7.1 miles. The atmosphere was electric and any sign of nerves soon disappeared.
The object of running the relay was not to get a good time (unless you were Mr Breen!) but the taking part and raising money for charity while doing so. The charity that we were running for is called Tinylife. This is a local charity that supports the families of premature babies, babies with a disability and helps support families if their baby has died. Tinylife has played an important part in my family's life as they have supported us since having our son.
I approached Mr Hutchinson to see if Glastry could fundraise for this great charity as a thank you for all the help they have given me and my family. It was a great honour to run in the relay race alongside friends and know that we were doing so for a great cause as many babies would benefit from the money we raised.

Student Council open new outside Toilet Block Posted June 14, 2015
For some years, members of the Student Council have campaigned to get additional pupil toilet facilities at the college. The existing toilet facilities in the original building were designed for a much smaller school population that the school currently has. The Education Authority recognised the need for additional facilities and constructed an outside toilet block which has recently been opened. Glastry College students, Emily Dunbar (Y8), Jennifer Dunbar (Y12) and Dylan Hamilton (Y9) have recently joined a few other young people from Holy Trinity Parish Church, Ballywalter, in raising much needed funds for the NI Chest Heart and Stroke.
They organised a sponsored messy fun day for the younger children. A few weeks later they provided baked goods and hosted a coffee morning for children and adults.
To date £800 has been raised to help with the Day Centre in Bangor and the Support Group in Kircubbin. Ursula Digney who runs the group came along to the coffee morning to thank the young people for their support.

This year saw the return of the Extended Schools Mini Rugby course for our cluster Primary Schools after having to cancel last year due to our pitches being out of commission.
Pupils from Portaferry Integrated, Kirkistown Primary and Portavogie Primary attended the course from April to June each Wednesday afternoon. The course was open to both boys and girls to learn the basics of the game of rugby: tackling, passing, rucking and what some of the rules mean. The course then culminated with their very own full contact game of mini-rugby on the last week.
Glastry College Family Fun Day - a great day for all! Posted June 14, 2015
Saturday 13th June saw the day of our Annual Family Fun Day. The weather was glorious and the day thoroughly enjoyed by all.
It was an early start for some with the Event's organisers arriving early at the College to meet the businesses who would supply our "fun!" After a few hours of preparation, including blowing up bungee runs and building high ropes courses, we were ready to go and the pupils and parents from all our local schools did not disappoint!
It was an excellent day and all had a great time. Several hundred people joined together on our sports pitches for some fun and time together. All commented on the tasty hog roast on offer this year too - it certainly filled some bellies and the Glastry Farm ice-cream also got a great response with the beautiful weather!
All in all it was a superb day with some fantastic summer weather to keep everyone smiling! To all who came along and made the day a success - we thank you and hope you all have a wonderful summer, whatever the weather holds!
We "kicked off" with a group visit to the Kingspan Stadium to watch the mighty Ulster play in the Rabo-direct League. SUFTUM! Pupils joined with our own rugby squads for this trip and all were excellently behaved with many positive comments about our group coming from the Ulster supporters around us at the game. Everyone really enjoyed the trip and said they would love to go again!
All pupils received a certificate for attending, along with some Ulster Rugby goodies. Special prizes were also awarded for stand out players from each school. We are looking forward to running our course again next year with hopefully more schools attending!
All pupils said they had a great day and really enjoyed coming to Glastry to see what it would be like to attend. The pupils were brilliantly behaved for the whole day and a credit to their schools. We wouldn't hesitate to invite them back again!
Friday 12th June saw the return of our P6 day. This is the second year of the day when P6 classes from our local feeder Primary schools are invited to the College to participate in a range of classes that pupils will experience when they join the College in Year 8.
This year saw around 110 pupils from 6 local schools attend the day. The day started when 2 coaches rolled up to the school turning circle and the pupils piled out of the buses. All pupils were excellently presented in their school uniforms and were eager to see what we had in store for them.
Pupils got to visit a Science lesson where they did some chromatography and executed some Jelly Babies, Technology where they had the opportunity to create their own desktop pen / pencil holder, ICT where they learned how to create a game using SCRATCH, French to learn all about the culture and the "language of love" and finally Home Economics where they got to make their very own croissants!

Pupils then embarked on an investigation of the new developments in the TQ, including the new museum, Arc housing developments, Belfast Met and the Science Park as well as questioning members of the public on their attitudes and perceptions of the regeneration. Though the trip was summed up best by a 9V pupil who commented to Mr Viner that they ‘didn’t feel like they were in Northern Ireland any more’! Perhaps the planners and architects had got something right – then again we were a long way from Portavogie!
As part of the topic ‘Cities: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ Y9 pupils have been learning about inner city decline and regeneration. To help them better understand urban regeneration pupils visited the £7 billion Titanic Quarter project in Belfast on the 9th and 10th of June to investigate whether all of that money is really worth it. To begin with pupils visited the only real history of the Titanic left, the Pump House and dry dock. This helped them fully understand the scale of the industry in the area 100 years ago and the 50,000+ people who were employed there,

On Thursday 18th June 2015 the boys’ athletics team competed in the North Down Secondary Schools Athletics Competition at Ballykillare, Bangor.

Boys Athletics team competes in North Down Area Athletics Meet Posted June 22, 2015
Exciting plans are in store this summer for our Year 8 group tutor classes. Mr McCord (Year 8 Year Head) and Miss Dougan (Literacy Coordinator) have decided that the pupils are going to participate in a Book Tracking competition.
The idea is that, this summer, three volunteers from each of the group tutor classes will take a book each, donated to them by the school, and leave it somewhere. Inside is a little message explaining the project and their group tutor’s email address. It is hoped that someone at the destination will
Year 8 Spread the Word Around the World Posted June 23, 2015
pick up the book, read our message and then take the book and leave it somewhere else. We will hopefully be informed of the progress of the books by email. The pupils are going to track how far their books go and there will be a special prize for the class whose book gets the furthest.
A lot of strategic thought has gone in to where the books are first going to be placed. Some of these destinations at the minute include a marina, Gatwick airport and even as far away as Australia. So if you’re out and about this summer and stumble across a book with a message inside, please read it and then let us know where you found it and finally pass it on!
